Natural wonders

With only 0.25% of the world's landmass, it's astonishing to consider that Costa Rica contains 5% of the world's biodiversity.  Approximately 25% of Costa Rica is composed of protected forests and reserves.

The dense rainforests of Costa Rica are a sanctuary for flora and fauna.  Over 800 species of birds alone make their home on the "Rich Coast".  Parrots, scarlet macaw and toucans are just a few of the bird sightings you will likely see.  Wildlife viewing is prevalent throughout the Peninsula as well.  Papagayo is home to both "White Face" and "Howler" monkeys.  Iguanas and Pizotes (a cross between monkeys and racoons) are among the daily sightings as well.  On the coast, you will see dolphins and whales at various times of the year and if you travel to Villa Braheem between the months of January and March, you will have an opportunity to witness one of natures truly beautiful experiences; when both leatherback and green sea turtles lay their eggs on the Northern Pacific Beaches.

Should you choose to venture to other parts of this diverse nation, you may want to visit one of its internationally renowned national parks.  Tortuguero National Park (translated as "full of turtles" is home to spider, howler and white throated capuchin monkeys; three-toed sloth, 320 species of birds and a wide variety of reptiles.  The park is recognized for the annual nesting of the endangered green turtle and is the most important nesting site for the species. Giant leatherback, hawksbill and loggerhead turtles also nest there.

A trip to the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve promises to be an amazing experience.  The forest is home to 2,000 plant species, including numerous orchids. Over 400 types of birds and 100 species of mammals can be found there.
